Revolutionizing Pet Grooming: The Story of FurLuxe and Prima Bathing Systems

As the new owner of Prima, I’ve embarked on an exciting journey to evaluate our existing pet bathing systems. My mission is clear: to understand my clients' needs and determine whether the machines truly meet them. The answer is both yes and no. While the Original and Encore machines perform well, I’ve also identified key areas where improvements could greatly enhance the user experience.

The Vision for Change

My initial concept was ambitious: to develop a modular pet bathing system that would offer basic functionality while allowing for a customizable add-on. Picture a brainstorming session, where a whiteboard bursts with bubbles of ideas and goals. As I sketched my vision, one critical question echoed: what problem was I solving by making changes?

Change solely for the sake of change isn't effective. However, with many systems designed over 25 years ago, it became evident that reevaluation was essential. During discussions with clients, I encountered several common questions:

• Can I rinse with the system?

• Does the system heat the water?

• Can I use different shampoos?

• What do I do with leftover water/shampoo at the end of the night?

Some questions had simple answers while others were complex. As I pondered these queries, one thought persisted: could we create a single machine that could resolve all these issues?

Being a problem-solver at heart, I was convinced a revolutionary design was possible. However, initial attempts to draft the concept met my first obstacle. Traditional manufacturing methods appeared too limiting. Either the designs were overly complex, or the costs for prototyping and tooling were prohibitively high.

Frustrated, I set my ideas aside. Then, a serendipitous moment occurred when Kevin visited to pick up an order his wife had placed. As we chatted, he noted our use of plastic parts and casually asked, “Have you ever considered 3D printing?” This innocent question ignited a spark of inspiration; Kevin was from the prototyping department at NIKE.

Exploring New Possibilities

Our discussion opened new avenues of creativity. Kevin highlighted advanced machines that NIKE had recently acquired. The potential of 3D printing for custom parts felt transformative—finally, a way to move beyond traditional constraints.

This experience reminded me of the importance of embracing adaptability. The use of 3D printing could help us design a system that accommodates various shampoo types, offers rinsing capabilities, and efficiently manages leftover water—all in a sleek machine.

The Concept Refinement

With renewed enthusiasm, I dove back into refining our concepts. Our goal was to create a modular pet bathing system adaptable to individual grooming needs. Imagine a basic unit that offers essentials like heated water and multiple shampoo dispensers, with additional attachments for rinsing.

For example, one design envisioned a base unit featuring:

• Connect to warm water source

• Switch shampoo dispensers for different needs.

• Easily turn flow of shampoo on and off in order to rinse

  
  

As I sketched out these designs, user-friendliness and aesthetics remained at the forefront. We sought to create a system that provided an exceptional bathing experience while making pet owners feel empowered in their grooming routine.

Solving the Common Issues

Throughout our discussions and iterations, several topics frequently emerged. The need for an effective rinsing function, reliable water temperature control, diversity in shampoo options, and a solution for leftover wastewater were critical concerns.

Rinsing Capabilities

A dependable rinsing capability is essential. Many systems leave pet owners struggling to wash out shampoo effectively. Our system already had the power to rinse better than any alternative, but clean water needed to be on call instantly. We removed premixed water/shampoo, in favor of a shampoo injection system, that injects shampoo into the water stream.

Warm Water

Pet comfort is critical, especially for those with thicker coats. Our solution was giving the option of connecting to an existing faucet or hard plumbing the unit. Research shows that dogs bathed in warm water have a better overall experience, leading to a calmer grooming session. Of course you can also use water buckets like our existing units do.

Shampoo Diversity

Each pet has unique grooming needs, necessitating the ability to use different shampoos. Our design allows multiple dispensers, easily swapable based on the pet’s breed or skin issues, accommodating specific requirements like hypoallergenic formulations for sensitive skins. A Shampoo selection module will be available soon which will make the process more streamlined as well.

Waste Management Solutions

One of the challenges we wanted to address was the leftover shampoo and water mix that traditionally accumulates at the end of the day. Reheating this mixture isn’t practical, so most shop owners simply drain and discard it, leading to unnecessary waste. Our new machine eliminates this issue by removing the need for a reservoir of pre-mixed solution. Instead, it draws clean water from a direct source and mixes shampoo only as needed, ensuring every drop is fresh. At the end of the night, simply disconnect the shampoo bottle, cap it for storage, and flush the supply line with fresh water—no waste, no hassle.

The Grand Launch of FurLuxe

After months of design, feedback, and refinement, we launched FurLuxe. The name itself reflects our commitment to quality—the kind of experience we want to give not just to pets but also their owners and groomers.

FurLuxe is not merely a bathing system; it stands as a promise to change how pet grooming is approached. The modular capabilities, efficient rinsing and diverse shampoo functions represent a significant advancement in the industry.
